Pakistan Super League(PSL)opened with Islamabad United’s come-from-behind victory over Lahore Qalandars by 5 wickets.

Line-ups for the PSL:

Lahore: Fakhar Zaman, Sohail Akhtar, M Hafeez, AB de Villiers, Anton Devcich, Brendan Taylor, Carlos Brathwaite, Yasir Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Rahat Ali.

Islamabad: Luke Ronchi, Phil Salt, Shadab Khan, Cameron Delport, Asif Ali, Mohammad Sami, Hussain Talat, Rizwan Hussain, Samit Patel, Faheem Ashraf, Waqas Masood

Asif Ali’s late six-laden gem in a difficult run-chase helped Islamabad United blow Lahore Qalandars by 5 wickets in the opening match of the Pakistan Super League 2019 held at the Dubai International Stadium.

Islamabad United lost three wickets in the final over of the powerplay to Rahat Ali before an unbeaten 59-run stand between Asif Ali (36* off 19) and Faheem Ashraf (23* off 11) for the sixth wicket got them over the line chasing a target of 172.

United could have been chasing many more. Qalandars had put together a punishing 97-run opening stand between Sohail Akhtar and Fakhar Zaman and were comfortably sat at 129/1 in the 14th over. Zaman raced to his third PSL fifty after Akhtar’s wicket by Faheem Ashraf in the 11th over and had AB de Villiers for the company at the other end, and a total in excess of 200 looked well within reach.

But after a 43-ball 65, Zaman lost his wicket to Shadab Khan and his bounce provoked a break-down, where Qalandars lost 6 wickets in the last 6 overs, adding only 41 runs. Mohammad Sami sensibly bowled Waqas Maqsood and Cameron Delport for 4 overs during this period, and the gamble paid off. Maqsood picked up the dangerous de Villiers and combined with Delport to pick 2 for 25 in the quiet four overs after Zaman’s wicket.

United’s quest was going well at 45 for no loss at the end of the five-over mark. And then that Rahat Ali over happened. Rizwan Hussain, Luke Ronchi, and Philip Salt all fell in one over, making life difficult for the batsmen to follow. Delport and Hussain Talat could only add 20 runs in the next 4 overs, the duo looking to prevent any further damage with careful play.

Rahat Ali returned in the 14th over to pick Delport’s wicket. Carlos Brathwaite’s scalp of Talat in the next over meant that the United were tottering again when Faheem Ashraf and Asif Ali got together in the 15th over, the equation then reading 54 to get from 5.2 overs.

Ashraf hit a six second-ball, followed it up with a couple of boundaries in the next off Yasir Shah and didn’t just bringing the run-rate back under control but also spurred on Asif Ali, who pulled off back-to-back sixes off Rahat Ali’s last over.

With 12 to get off the last two overs, both Asif Ali and Faheem Ashraf hit a 6 each, the latter’s hit sealing the game with four balls to spare.

Brief Scores: Lahore Qalandars 171/8 in 20 overs (Fakhar Zaman 65, Faheem Ashraf 2-24) lost to Islamabad United 177/5 in 19.2 overs (Hussain Talat 37, Asif Ali 36*, Rahat 4-29) by five wickets
